Artist Statement

My films seek to celebrate the diverse perspectives and rich textures of Black experiences, encouraging viewers to look beyond the surface and engage deeply with lives that reflect a wide spectrum of humanity. As a Harlem-born filmmaker, my work is rooted in authentic storytelling that illuminates lives and communities often sidelined in mainstream narratives. I am especially drawn to the resilience, unity, and transformation within stories that go unnoticed, particularly within the Black community, which is frequently misrepresented as a monolith.

My approach is defined by a collaborative process with my subjects; I believe that documentary filmmaking is an act of connection and empathy. As I film, I actively learn about my subjects, shaping each project into a partnership where their voices and perspectives are central. This collaboration informs and inspires the film, guiding it toward an honest and resonant representation that honors the subject's experiences.

Each project I undertake is purpose-driven, whether through documentary, experimental, or narrative storytelling. My work primarily explores histories, struggles, and triumphs within Black communities, though my stylistic choices vary depending on the project. I often incorporate 16mm film and non-sync sound for a more textural, experimental approach, while other works lean into vérité or traditional narrative structures. In Showtime, I capture the dynamic energy of street performers; in KINGDOME, I highlight the legacy of a Harlem basketball tournament and its impact across generations. For Those That Lived There explores gentrification and displacement in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood, revealing the deep ties between memory and place. While each film has a distinct aesthetic, they share a common thread: an exploration of Black experiences, resilience, and cultural shifts.

Through careful attention to detail and a commitment to authenticity whether in the way I frame a scene, interact with my subjects, or construct a narrative I aim to create films that not only tell stories but also challenge viewers to reflect, question, and find meaning in the lives of others. My work strives to foster dialogue and understanding, bridging divides and inviting audiences to see beyond their own experiences into the lives of others.
